Learn Balloon Lexicon: Alighting: rising from the ground. The Box: this is the wind pattern for the area that allows the Pilot to navigate the Albuquerque from the take off point. Basket: As you can imagine this is the gondola usually wicker made That the participants ride in. Chase Crew: They usually are in a pick up truck and follow the Balloon after launce to assist in the landing and pack up. Contour flying: skimming just about the objects on the ground. Corrales: Where a lot of the balloons land Crown lines: This are the ropes that hang from the balloon fabric So the ground crew or chase team can assist with the inflation or Deflation process. Envelope: The fabric that the balloon is made of which holds The air or gas. Flaring out: During the decent and preparing for landing you level off the Basket. Gore: No this is not Al, it is the fabric panels that run from the mouth or opening to the crown or top of the fabric. Ground Trailing: same as skimming the ground without hitting things Kissing: Two balloons touching gracefully then bouncing apart. Mouth: The opening above the basket Parachute: No this is not to jump with. It is the fabric that is above the crown of the fabric that holds the hot air inside the envelope. Releasing the parachute (opening it) releases the hot air. You can guess what happens then. Pibal: The weather balloons sent up prior to flight to test the wind. Red line: The line that pulls the parachute open allowing hot air to be removed. Skirt: The protective seal around the basket also called the scoop. Tether Line: The rope that is attached to the ground to prevent the balloon from flying without a pilot. Touch and go: The pilot shows their technical skill by tapping the ground with the basket then alighting again. Volume: the capacity in cubic feet of the envelope about 77,000 for the average.
